Specified Source CARB Feed-stock Verification
Feed-stock Type: Used Cooking Oil
In today’s episode of “Inside the Used Cooking Oil Industry with Reiter Software,” we dive into WHY used cooking oil is sometimes more valuable to the ISCC and CARB/LCFS market, and how point source verification of used cooking oil collections allow you to better market your Specified Source Feedstock to these three industry segments.
There have been times in the past where this “point source verification” and/or “ISCC certification” can lead to sale prices 50 cents per gallon (or more) higher than in adjacent non-verified yellow grease and used cooking oil markets.
We discuss the logic behind these feed-stock verification systems and how our software get you prepared to cash in on these opportunities.
What Is Point-Source Feedstock Verification?
Point-source (or specified-source) verification means documenting exactly where your used cooking oil came from: the specific restaurants and facilities, the volumes, and the dates. Certification schemes like ISCC and the verification requirements built into CARB’s LCFS use that paper trail to confirm the oil is genuine waste feedstock and not virgin oil being passed off as UCO. When a buyer can trace your oil back to its source, they can safely claim the low-carbon credits that make UCO so valuable.
Why Verified UCO Sells for More
Biofuel producers earn RINs and LCFS credits based on the verified origin of their feedstock. Fraud in the UCO market, where cheaper oils get mislabeled as used cooking oil, makes that verification valuable: a documented, specified-source load carries far less risk for the buyer. That reduced risk is what has historically translated into 50 cents per gallon or more over unverified yellow grease and used cooking oil.
How to Get Your UCO Verified
Verification starts with clean, consistent records: log every pickup with its source, volume, and date, and keep an unbroken chain of custody from the kitchen to the buyer. Gantry Ops captures that data automatically as you run your routes, which is exactly what ISCC and CARB verification depend on. From there, Reiter Consulting can help you position your feedstock as specified-source, and you can sell it to Reiter Trading at the premium it earns.
